Manuel Parra
Chairman of the Board
Currently one of two Managing Partners of Urbaniza—a Texas Limited Partnership—engaged in residential and commercial real estate development.
He retired from Compaq Computer Corporation in 1999, where he was Senior Vice President in charge of the International Division and reported to the CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer. He was a member of the Corporate Strategy Team, responsible for the manufacturing, marketing, sales, service and support of all Compaq products in the Latin America and Caribbean region; he had 14 subsidiaries, 1 manufacturing facility and 6 service centers reporting to him. The division had 1,800 employees and annual sales of $3.4 billion. He also supervised the Global Accounts Group, responsible for the marketing, sales and support of all Compaq products and services to the top 100 corporate customers on a worldwide basis.
From 1986 to 1990, he was the Vice President of Government, Communications and Services Line of Business for Unisys Corporation.
Roberto Leitón
CEO
Roberto joined ArtinSoft in 2002. Since then, he has focused his efforts in the Enterprise Migration Solutions space, leveraging ArtinSoft’s technology to develop new markets by working with partners worldwide. Before his CEO designation, he served as CFO and WW Sales Director for ArtinSoft Corporation. Prior to joining ArtinSoft, Roberto worked in the Retail and Wholesale business where he was in charge of various international roles.
He graduated from Otterbein College with emphasis in Finance and has attended the Roehampton University in London and the Wharton Business School in Pennsylvania.
Carlos Araya, Ph.D.
Research Director
Carlos Araya has been recognized as the most important contributor to the IT industry for the development of Costa Rica, helping to position the country as a world-class supplier of technology and services. Throughout his career, Carlos has been an active entrepreneur in key private and public ventures and has received numerous recognitions in technology innovation.
In 1993, Carlos founded ArtinSoft, world leader in software transformation solutions, and was its CEO and Chairman for 15 years. Carlos is founding member of Capital Empresarial Centroamericano, the first technology investment group in the region; of Cenfotec, lead institute for IT education; and founding Chairman of the Computing Research Center at the Costa Rican Institute of Technology (ITCR), where he chaired its Department of Computer Science.
Carlos holds a PhD from the University of Kansas, an MSc in Computers Science and an MEng in Operations Research from Monterrey Institute of Technology, and an Engineering degree in Information Systems from ITCR.
Craig Bruya
Director since 2004
Before retiring in 2001, Craig Bruya was General Manager of WW Finance & Administration and Corporate Services for Microsoft Corporation (NASD: MSFT). He provided financial support to CEO Steve Ballmer. In addition, he handled real estate, facilities, employee services, MS Studios, procurement, accounts payable, and product management for Microsoft's internal e-commerce tools such as MS Market and MS Expense.
Craig started working at Microsoft in July 1989 and served in a variety of roles, primarily in International Finance. In addition to positions in Redmond, he held temporary assignments as GM of Microsoft New Zealand and Controller of Microsoft Australia. Earlier in his career, Craig spent nine years with the audit division of Arthur Andersen & Company in Seattle, Brussels, Belgium and Athens, Greece.
Craig is currently pursuing a second career in education, teaches accounting and management classes at Seattle University and the University of Washington, and serves as a board member for several non-profit organizations. He is also a consultant on special projects for Microsoft CFO John Connors, and teaches in Microsoft's Executive Development program.
Richard Beck
Director since 1995
Richard is an honors graduate in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Michigan. An ArtinSoft Board Member since 1995, Mr. Beck's ample experience in a number of diverse private and public sector entities has played a significant role in the company’s steady growth.
Richard's participation in the Costa Rican business sector during the past 45 years has been exceptionally active: He was Director of Kativo Chemical Industries Inc. (a subsidiary of HB Fuller); Director of Productos de Concreto (cement); and founder and President of Polipack of Costa Rica (plastics). He is also co-founder and Honorary President of Atlas Eléctrica (electrical appliances) since 1961; founder and President of BANEX (Agro-industrial Bank of Exports Inc.) until 1981; and founder and President of Taco Bell Board of Directors since 1992.
In the public sphere, his career is especially noteworthy: He has been an industrial advisor to several Costa Rican presidents; co-founder of the Central American Institute for Business Administration (INCAE) in 1993; and director of the National Stock Exchange. Since 1993 he has been Honorary President of the Costa Rican Chamber of Industry; co-founder and Honorary President of the Costa Rican Union of Chambers since 1973; and founder and Honorary President of CINDE (Costa Rican Coalition of Initiatives for Development). He is also the financial coordinator for the CEDES-Don Bosco Project (Silesian Education Center for Vocational Training School).
Tom Button
Board Member and Research Collaborator
During his first 15 years with Microsoft, Tom led many of Microsoft's most prominent developer tools businesses, including Visual Basic from concept to its peak as one of the most popular development tools in the world. As Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Developer Division, he led the development and launch of Visual Studio, The Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN), and Microsoft's startup effort in the enterprise tools space (launched as Visual Studio Team System).
In addition, Tom managed development of various programming and scripting technologies, including Visual Basic for Applications, VBScript, and Microsoft Office Developer Edition. In 2003, Tom was tapped to serve as Corporate Vice President of worldwide product management and marketing for Microsoft Windows, where he unified and rebuilt the Windows' marketing organization and was in charge of several innovative partner co-marketing efforts, including the Windows Marketplace – for which he was awarded a variety of eCommerce related patents. Tom’s final role at Microsoft was CVP of Platform Strategy, where he led the creation of Microsoft's longest-term opportunity map and product strategy. Since leaving Microsoft, Tom has served as advisor to a variety of companies across a wide range of categories from networking to developer tools to location based services.
